These dangers include inhalation and exposure to toxic fumes, ingestion of chemicals or contaminated food, increased risk of developmental delays and disabilities, and increased risk of child abuse, sexual abuse and injury. Possible topics brainstormed at the last social committee meeting include: NETS standards Online professional development for educators Presidential candidates and their educational platforms Group swap. Tell everyone about your favorite groups. 2. New avatar orientation We will be hosting a new avatar orientation social the first Thursday of every month one hour prior to the regular social hour: 5 PM SLT. We will be looking for ISTE SL members interested in helping new avatars acclimate to Second Life and the ISTE socials. We will also be determining the structure for the ISTE socials. 3. International Social hour We will be looking for an ISTE SL member to host a social once a month that is at a time convenient for international avatars. 4. ISTE Social Connectors We will be insituting a new program at the ISTE socials: ISTE Connectors. Connectors are volunteers who volunteer to greet avatars and help avatars orient themselves at the ISTE socials. You can act as a connector as often as is convenient for you. Looking for a way to volunteer at ISTE? This is perfect for avatars who want to contribute but cannot volunteer on a regular basis. Have ideas or want to volunteer but cannot make the social? Tuesday, February 19, 6 PM SLT ISTE Speakers Series Session Online Tutoring Across Different Platforms with Alja Sulčič (SL: iAlja Writer) Alja is a virtual platform expert in Slovenia working for Artesia, a small start-up focused on building virtual communities. Prior to joining Artesia she was an online tutor at the Faculty of Management Koper at University of Primorska for three years. She will be presenting about her experience as an online tutor in an online e-business course in which students were introduced to different internet technologies, from Moodle to Second Life, and about the challenges of working with emerging technologies in general. Alja is a member of the Second Life Volunteer Program, working mostly with new Slovenian Second Life users. Schooled: Confessions of an Educator on the Teen Grid by Kevin Jarrett (SL: KJ Hax) Kevin is a K-4 Technology Facilitator at an elementary school in New Jersey and also teaches online, part-time for Walden University. He has led a group of teens from his district in an after-school Second Life club (as part of the Open University's Schome Park research project) since November 2007. Come to this session to learn about Schome Park's unique and amazing research-based build (that is currently looking for teachers and student participants to join, for FREE). What's gone well so far? What could have been better? What have the students learned or experienced? What knowledge have they gained? Educators Interested in exploring the Teen Grid with their students will come away with a better understanding of what's involved with managing a classroom project (or after-school club) as well as other existing Teen Grid projects to consider joining (also for FREE)! Tuesday, January 15 *SPECIAL DOUBLE-SESSION DAY* 3 PM SLT ISTE Speakers Series Session An Introduction to the Sloodle Project ISTE is proud to present this introduction to the Sloodle project by Daniel Livingstone (SL: Buddy Sprocket) and Jia Dewitz (SL: Gia Rossini). Buddy and Gia will be providing an overview of the application, the project's history, and Sloodle's implications for you as an educator. It will feature a brief demo of some of the tools that have been developed and include Q&A. Participants that create an account beforehand at sloodle.org will be able to experience the system firsthand. PLEASE NOTE: Linden Lab is planning scheduled maintenance between 10am and 3pm on January 15th. Although no 'downtime' is expected there may be 'intermittent service interruptions.' Please plan accordingly! 6 PM SLT ISTE Speakers Series Session Maintaining Intellectual Freedom in a Filtered World The Chicago Public Schools Department of Libraries presents Doug Johnson (SL: BlueSkunk Johnson), Director of Media and Technology, Mankato Public Schools. This session will summarize the concepts of intellectual freedom as they have traditionally applied to schools and libraries, suggest ways that there values should be extended to online resources, and conclude a strategy for using Internet filters appropriately. This tool allows avatars to interact with web-based data (in this case represented by the 2D mind map and its nodes (about 1,000) representing thousands of links to websites, articles, videos, conferences, and more. Tuesday, January 29, 6 PM SLT ISTE Speaker Series Session Education on the Islands of jokaydia in Second Life with jokay Wollongong Jo Kay aka jokay Wollongong will share information about the various projects she is involved with in Second Life, including the Islands of jokaydia, where she is supporting a growing community of educators and artists in Second Life who are exploring various strategies for the use of virtual worlds in their practice. She will also talk about the incredibly comprehensive SLeducation Wiki which documents educational uses of Second Life and is recognized as one of the most valuable resources available for educators exploring virtual worlds. The event will commence at 6pm SLT on 1/29 at the ISTE Beach/Campfire Ring area where Jo Kay will facilitate a brief introduction and a question and answer session. This will be followed by a field trip to the Islands of jokaydia where participants will have the opportunity to explore the Islands and also meet some of the jokaydia Community members who are working there.
