[17:52] KJ Hax: awesome
[17:53] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks poises her fingers over the keyboard
[17:53] KJ Hax: I have your intro here thanks
[17:53] KJ Hax: I'll open with a few words
[17:53] KJ Hax: then turn it over to you!
[17:56] Unklar Klaar: had to go to the DEN; they're using some pics of me for publicity and I had some autograph-seekers (lol)
[17:56] KJ Hax: nice
[17:56] KJ Hax: SL pr or RL?
[17:56] Unklar Klaar: ha ha! SL of course

[18:01] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: she is very nice, yes
[18:01] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: KJ
[18:01] KJ Hax: yes?
[18:01] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Can I manipulate this whiteboard?
[18:01] KJ Hax: Oh yes!
[18:01] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: can you add me to the group
[18:01] KJ Hax: you advance the slides
[18:01] KJ Hax: is that what you mean?
[18:02] KJ Hax: try it
[18:02] KJ Hax: you may need to
[18:02] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: SL went wonky on me
[18:02] KJ Hax: change your group to
[18:02] KJ Hax: ISTE Presenters
[18:02] KJ Hax: you should have been added
[18:02] KJ Hax: earlier today.
[18:02] KJ Hax: please ckecl
[18:02] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I was added. there was an issue with it
[18:02] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: can you add me again right quick or do I really need it?
[18:02] KJ Hax: I can't do it
[18:02] KJ Hax: maybe corrine can
[18:03] WhiteBoard (s): Showing Image 2/12 - 2ccsllogo

[18:03] KJ Hax: ok
[18:03] KJ Hax: see it works
[18:03] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: its fine
[18:03] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: no thing
[18:03] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: it works
[18:03] KJ Hax: kewl
[18:03] KJ Hax: yay us
[18:03] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Or I'll use you as my assistant!
[18:03] KJ Hax: lol

[18:03] WhiteBoard (s): Showing Image 1/12 - 1cdlogo
[18:04] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: but we have to remind people not to touch the board
[18:04] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks laughs
[18:04] KJ Hax: lol
[18:04] WhiteBoard (s): Now showing Image 1/12 - 1cdlogo
[18:04] KJ Hax: actually I have a sneaky way to fix that
[18:04] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: these tools are so compelling
[18:04] KJ Hax: but it's too late. :)
[18:04] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: we must click!
[18:04] KJ Hax: ok folks
[18:04] KJ Hax: please take your seats
[18:04] KJ Hax: so we can begin!
[18:05] KJ Hax: Ariandne
[18:05] KJ Hax: Gus
[18:05] KJ Hax: Lindsay
[18:05] KJ Hax: Plenty of seats!
[18:05] KJ Hax: :)
[18:05] KJ Hax: Ok!
[18:05] KJ Hax: Let's get started!
[18:05] KJ Hax: Welcome everyone, to our weekly Speakers Series event
[18:05] Ariadne Yiyuan: I have lost my ability to sit for some reason. If you don't mind, I'll stand.
[18:05] KJ Hax: np Ariadne!
[18:05] KJ Hax: We are thrilled to see so many new faces as well as
[18:06] KJ Hax: familiar ones. :)
[18:06] KJ Hax: Tonights' presentation
[18:06] Aram Gausman: there is no voice?
[18:06] KJ Hax: is in response to feedback we've gotten
[18:06] KJ Hax: no, text only
[18:06] Aram Gausman: ok
[18:06] KJ Hax: that the higher ed foilks
[18:06] KJ Hax: would like to have more evnets
[18:06] KJ Hax: tailored to them.
[18:06] KJ Hax: So we were thrilled when
[18:07] KJ Hax: Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks
[18:07] KJ Hax: agreed to present.
[18:07] KJ Hax: Next wee, Kinghtbar Jewell, who is with us now,
[18:07] KJ Hax: will be here. She is firom
[18:07] Knightbar Jewell: thank you
[18:07] KJ Hax: East Tennessee University and
[18:07] KJ Hax: will continue our higher ed focus!
[18:07] KJ Hax: Ok....
[18:07] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: excellent!
[18:07] KJ Hax: About Pipsqueak....
[18:07] Unklar Klaar: go pips! you da avi!
[18:07] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks laughs
[18:08] KJ Hax: I'm gonna paste this in....hang on
[18:08] KJ Hax: Denise is a professor and librarian at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn IL. She is also an instructor of Reference Services and Information Literacy in the Library Technology Program and teaches Industrial Safety in the Manufacturing program at COD. Denise has been in-world for a little over a year and is the founder of the Community Colleges in SL group. She's here tonight to share information about how community colleges are using SL and what her CC group is planning for the future.
[18:08] KJ Hax: Ok!
[18:08] KJ Hax: Everyone get that? Lol
[18:08] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: that's a mouth-full there
[18:08] Unklar Klaar: will there be a quiz?
[18:08] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: texty!
[18:08] KJ Hax: Pipsqueak, the floor is yours!
[18:08] Unklar Klaar: :-(
[18:08] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Thanks.
[18:08] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I'm so honored to be here
[18:09] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and so glad that our avatars cannot reveal our nervousness
[18:09] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I'm sure there's an anim for that but I thankfully do not have it
[18:09] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I hope that you'll not mind a decidedly non-flashy presentation!
[18:09] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I plan just to chat a bit and follow up with a good discussion with you.
[18:09] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and I'm not much for powerpoint
[18:10] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: sorry to offend the PP Lovers in the audience!
[18:10] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I hope that is alright for you all this evening. :)
[18:10] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: As KJ said, I am librarian.
[18:10] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I also teach a few Library Science topics and Industrial Safety.
[18:10] WhiteBoard (s): Now showing Image 1/12 - 1cdlogo
[18:10] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: for those of you who are wondering just how a librarian comes to teach industrial safety, that's a long story
[18:11] WhiteBoard (s): Now showing Image 1/12 - 1cdlogo
[18:11] WhiteBoard (s): Showing Image 2/12 - 2ccsllogo
[18:11] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: but that interest has motivated me to explore virtual worlds for those students
[18:11] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I'm going to use this slide board a little
[18:11] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I know we are all compelled to click things
[18:12] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: but mouses-off the board for now
[18:12] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks laughs
[18:12] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: My interest in virtual worlds was initially in library work but has morphed
[18:12] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: into a vision for providing immersive learning experiences and simulations
[18:12] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: for Community College students and how librarians can be a part of
[18:13] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: those experiences
[18:13] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Librarians out there?
[18:13] WhiteBoard (s): Now showing Image 2/12 - 2ccsllogo
[18:13] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks smiles
[18:13] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: how many of you are librarians?
[18:13] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Give me a hollar
[18:13] Agnesa Capalini: I am
[18:13] Perplexity Peccable: yo!
[18:13] KJ Hax: Blu heron
[18:13] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks makes the fist of Librarian Power
[18:13] KJ Hax: Please mute your mic
[18:13] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: My people!
[18:14] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks smiles
[18:14] Perplexity Peccable: w00t!
[18:14] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: About 8 months ago, I started a group called Community Colleges in SL
[18:14] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Much to my surprise, this group now has about 180 members from all over
[18:14] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: the US, Canada and the UK
[18:14] Antilles Mighty: Is there suppose to be voice for this... or no?
[18:14] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: The main purpose of this group is to network, ramp up new faculty
[18:14] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: No voice
[18:14] KJ Hax: Text only....
[18:14] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I'm very sorry about that
[18:15] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I'd love to do this in voice
[18:15] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: but my computer hates me
[18:15] mOOn Jaecies: are the slides suppose to be changing?
[18:15] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: no, I'm just talking
[18:15] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I will advance them as I go
[18:15] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: anyhoo...
[18:15] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: The main purpose of this group is to network, ramp up new faculty
[18:15] WhiteBoard (s): Now showing Image 2/12 - 2ccsllogo
[18:15] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and to discuss issues that are of specific concern to the community college and its students
[18:16] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I could spend hours talking about what community colleges are doing in SL because I'm so proud of what we've been able to accomplish
[18:16] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: but I will not make you suffer
[18:16] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks smiles
[18:16] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I'll just focus on three or four of the ground-breakers
[18:16] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: the stuff that makes me keep coming back and pounding the pavement/pixels to bring community college students into the virtual world.
[18:17] WhiteBoard (s): Now showing Image 2/12 - 2ccsllogo
[18:17] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Community Colleges are very active in SL but we are pretty quiet with our work
[18:17] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Which, I imagine, is why KJ roped me into coming here and talking to you tonight
[18:17] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks waves to KJ
[18:17] KJ Hax: :)
[18:17] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: We don't have enormous groups of sims we are developing, in fact, there are very few CC's that have even one sim in development
[18:18] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Most of us are working on small parcels that we are leasing from Educational organizations like the Alliance Library System, Sloan-C or the NMC
[18:18] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: This may sound sad, but this is how CC's have always worked.
[18:18] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: We do A LOT with a little!
[18:18] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I know this way of working is very familiar to K-12 educators too. :)
[18:18] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I think that this is a strength of the community college faculty, and our students, in SL
[18:18] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: We make every prim count, every ounce of resources are used creatively and I think that in itself has meaning
[18:19] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: We also are very good at finding help and supporting one another when we need it.
[18:19] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I can use our shining star, Desi Stockton of Literature Alive,
[18:19] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: as an example of a community college faculty member who has made SL a credible venue in CC education
[18:19] Perplexity Peccable: Yay, Desi!
[18:19] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: on virtually no institutional purse.
[18:19] WhiteBoard (s): Showing Image 3/12 - 3 Dante's Inferno and Linden Hills, Dante's Inferno (2
[18:20] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: this is Desi and Eloise's Dante's Inferno
[18:20] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: How many have been there?
[18:20] Perplexity Peccable: Lady Fiddlesticks, will these slies be posted in Slideshare?
[18:20] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: if you like Lexi, yes
[18:20] Perplexity Peccable: Many thanks!
[18:20] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: .
[18:20] Siri Vezina: I visited the Hills and the Inferno
[18:20] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Have any of you been to the Inferno?
[18:21] Perplexity Peccable: Yes
[18:21] KJ Hax: Yes!
[18:21] Ariadne Yiyuan: Yes. I have
[18:21] WhiteBoard (s): Now showing Image 3/12 - 3 Dante's Inferno and Linden Hills, Dante's Inferno (2
[18:21] RavenPhoenix Zenovka: Yes!
[18:21] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: It is an amazing work
[18:21] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and is being built by STUDENT
[18:21] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: S
[18:21] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: yes, you heard me right
[18:21] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks laughs
[18:21] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I love that the students are involved
[18:21] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and Desi has done some incredible things with CC students
[18:22] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Most of Desi's work was made possible by donations of land, getting small development grants
[18:22] WhiteBoard (s): Showing Image 4/12 - 4 Crumb, Cevert (103, 83, 46)
[18:22] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and getting people to volunteer their expertise to the Literature Alive group
[18:22] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Not to mention her working during her own time to bring Community College students to the virtual world
[18:22] WhiteBoard (s): Showing Image 5/12 - 5: Renaissance Island, Renaissance Island (117, 237, 27
[18:22] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Her institution recently acquired a sim, which is great for Desi and her students
[18:22] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: The faculty at Tacoma Community College is another group that is doing great things in SL with small grant funding and lots of their own time
[18:23] WhiteBoard (s): Showing Image 6/12 - 6nesim_004
[18:23] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: You may have heard of the NESIM project which uses intricately scripted simulations to train nursing students for work in emergency rooms
[18:23] Perplexity Peccable: They did a presentation here
[18:23] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Has anyone had the opp. to see this in action?
[18:23] KJ Hax: Yes!
[18:23] Perplexity Peccable: Yes!
[18:23] Ariadne Yiyuan: Yes.
[18:23] Laural McCallen: Yes
[18:23] mOOn Jaecies: yes, and used it too. very kewl!
[18:23] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I was almost in tears, I was so impressed and excited about it
[18:24] WhiteBoard (s): Showing Image 7/12 - 7nesim_008
[18:24] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: You may have heard of the NESIM project which uses intricately scripted
simulations to train nursing students for work in emergency rooms]
[18:24] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: oops
[18:24] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: LOL
[18:24] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: As you can imagine, community college education is heavily reliant on simulations and lab work
[18:24] WhiteBoard (s): Showing Image 8/12 - 8 EEEL
[18:24] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: in its vocational, allied health and technical training areas
[18:24] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: SL and other virtual worlds can provide a platform that is flexible, scalable and relatively inexpensive
[18:25] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Here is an incredible project from a community college in Vancouver BC, Sprott Shaw
[18:25] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: this one makes me just swoon
[18:25] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: In this simulation, the student builds an electric circuit using this board and the HUD
[18:25] KJ Hax: Wow....
[18:25] Unklar Klaar: physics teacher takes note!
[18:25] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: The circuit is sent to the web where it is tested, then the schematic is sent back to the student in-world.
[18:25] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: How much does this rock? :)
[18:26] KJ Hax: Shocking!
[18:26] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: So, we have here a connection
[18:26] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: to the outside web
[18:26] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: that processes information from SL
[18:26] WhiteBoard (s): Now showing Image 8/12 - 8 EEEL
[18:26] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and SENDS IT BACK
[18:26] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: That's how Community Collges put their thing down!
[18:26] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: We rock
[18:26] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks laughs
[18:26] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: but here's the shocking part:
[18:27] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: According to the manager of this build, they were able to create this and other builds on their three sims for 10,000.
[18:27] WhiteBoard (s): Showing Image 9/12 - 9 Ann Myers Medical Center - Sprot, Hospital (142, 193
[18:27] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: The hospital at Sprott
[18:27] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: has incredible simulations in radiography
[18:27] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: so the students can repeat again and again
[18:27] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: as a supplement to real lab time
[18:28] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: this 10K spent on these builds
[18:28] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: This is nothing when compared to the cost of pre-developed simulation software programs that go out of date very quickly in the technical areas.
[18:28] KJ Hax: 10k L or USD?
[18:28] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: oh, USD
[18:28] Perplexity Peccable: real money :)
[18:29] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: which, again, is not much when you compare it to what we pay for in lab costs
[18:29] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: or, I should say, what our students have to pay
[18:29] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: The work at my college is pretty basic. ;)
[18:29] WhiteBoard (s): Showing Image 10/12 - 10 College of DuPage, Eduisland 3 (238, 101, 39)
[18:30] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: We created an immersive experience based on Wordsworth's Tintern Abbey. This was also done on a shoestring
[18:30] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I'm also happy to say that we offer this build to any instructor from anywhere that wants to use it
[18:30] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I've scripted the activities for use by more than one instructor but our goal is to collaborate on curriculum that can be easily shared by faculty from variety of institutions
[18:30] WhiteBoard (s): Showing Image 11/12 - 11 College of DuPage, Eduisland 3 (205, 91, 151)
[18:30] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: We also make our classroom in the clouds available to any educator that needs it
[18:31] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: this classroom, for some reason, is constantly being used by the homeless
[18:31] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: teachers looking for a private place to be with students
[18:31] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Speaking of being open and collaborative--
[18:31] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Central Piedmont Community College offers ANY faculty member free office space for as long as the faculty member needs it.
[18:32] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: If you'd like contact info on that offer, I'd be happy to provide it afterward
[18:32] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: They do this simply as a way to help new educators along in their SL
[18:32] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: This is very generous but this activity does serve the central mission of the community college--
[18:32] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: to collaborate and build community
[18:33] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: This brings me to the dream goal of the Community Colleges in SL group
[18:33] WhiteBoard (s): Showing Image 12/12 - 12 ccsl_join
[18:33] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: We are forming (very loosely right now!) an initiative to create an in-world consortium of Comm. Colleges
[18:33] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and hope to include highschools that are currently partnered with community colleges
[18:33] Perplexity Peccable: Bravo!
[18:33] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: The goal is to acquire permanent building space for several schools
and to create learning activities]
[18:33] KJ Hax: Outstanding!
[18:33] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: hat will be collaboratively built by faculty and shared--
[18:34] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: sharing curriculum is not unheard of but it is not commonplace.
[18:34] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: SL can be an excellent test bed for taking collaboration to the next level in CC's.
[18:34] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Here is another strength of virtual worlds for CC's---
[18:34] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: the ability to knock out the geography barrier
and bring Community College students and faculty together]
[18:34] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: In the US, we have curriculum programs that are fairly uniform from school to school,
[18:35] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: though our state curriculum requirements may be slightly different.
[18:35] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I am currently creating a proposal and a plan for this consortium program which I'll be presenting at a CC conference in October
[18:35] WhiteBoard (s): Now showing Image 12/12 - 12 ccsl_join
[18:35] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: The goal is to start with a minimum of ten colleges
and then locate the grant funding!]
[18:35] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I know...wish me luck! :)
[18:35] KJ Hax: GOOD LUCK!
[18:35] Perplexity Peccable: luck :)
[18:35] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: One of the major hurdles for this sort of program is, of course, the same hurdle that we face with bringing even one small group of students to SL:
[18:36] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: The technology.
[18:36] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: The majority of our schools do not have the bandwidth nor the computing equipment
[18:36] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: to give our students access to youtube let alone bring them to VR
[18:36] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: This failure of our information technology infrastructure is not indicative of some major flaw in our individual IT departments..
[18:36] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: it is a failure of our country's inability to provide good broadband access to its citizens.
[18:37] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: We can talk (grumble) about this a little bit more later...
[18:37] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Anyway, how do we overcome this obstacle?
[18:37] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: We do what we've always done...we do the best with what we have and wait for the infrastructure to catch up
[18:37] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Another barrier that we struggle with is the "digital divide" phenomenon.
[18:37] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: How many people have the DD Guilt?
[18:37] Perplexity Peccable: me
[18:37] Knightbar Jewell: what is that
[18:38] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: A librarian
[18:38] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks smiles
[18:38] KJ Hax: Dewey Decimall?
[18:38] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: The Digital Divide
[18:38] Perplexity Peccable: haves vs have-nots
[18:38] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Where technology availability and training is avaialble only to the few
[18:38] Perplexity Peccable: and underutilized by those
[18:38] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and the have nots are a growing population!
[18:39] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: That's a whole other talk (with voice next time, promise!)
[18:39] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Some educators feel that we are widening this divide by offering virtual worlds in our teaching when we know that many of our students do not have the technology at home to access SL
[18:39] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I see our responsibility here as two-fold
[18:39] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Instead of waiting for our students to catch up at home
[18:40] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: we provide appropriate tech. at school and in libraries
[18:40] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: We continue to innovate
since innovation is the only way for us to get under the skins of our respective administration]
[18:40] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: locally and nationally, and demand better for our students through great work
[18:40] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: In community colleges, the average student is coming to school to advance their careers, to learn a job
[18:41] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Virtual worlds are becoming the new workspace,
[18:41] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: as we have seen by IBM's recent SL acquisition
[18:41] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and other large tech companies like Intel using some form of
virtual world to increase the functionality of distributed teams]
[18:41] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Instead of getting our students together in online, text-based groups
[18:41] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: (which they hate, and we all know it)
[18:42] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: we can give them experience in what could be their future workplace
[18:42] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Well, I've said a whole bunch of things just now, sorry!
[18:42] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I get slightly passionate about this topic.
[18:42] Perplexity Peccable: important things.
[18:42] KJ Hax: I'll say! :) Wow! Superb!
[18:42] KJ Hax: Did you want to open it up for quesrtions now Pips?
[18:43] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I'd like to open this up for you all to give your opinions
[18:43] Knightbar Jewell: we need to be passionate about our work and our students
[18:43] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: or to ask questions
[18:43] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: If I had voice (grumble) it would have been quicker!
[18:43] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: LOL
[18:43] Perplexity Peccable: I hope this chatlog is preserved somewhere!
[18:43] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: questions, comments?
[18:43] KJ Hax: Thank you so much!
[18:43] KJ Hax: This was fantastic!
[18:43] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks laughs
[18:43] mOOn Jaecies: how many colleges of 10, do you have interested so far?
[18:43] KJ Hax: cmon folks
[18:44] KJ Hax: give it up for Pipsqueak!
[18:44] Perplexity Peccable: Our library administration is concerned about the security of offering SL on public workstations.
[18:44] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: So far we have 10!
[18:44] Laural McCallen: Hoooo!
[18:44] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks laughs
[18:44] mOOn Jaecies: wow!
[18:44] Perplexity Peccable: w00t!
[18:44] Unklar Klaar: encore!
[18:44] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: That sort of protective thinking has got to go!
[18:44] Unklar Klaar: author, author!
[18:44] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: thank you, everyone.
[18:44] Laural McCallen: Hoooo!
[18:44] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: so patient
[18:44] Ophelia Lockjaw: you had mentioned getting HS involved....what is your plan to make this happen?
[18:44] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Well, for the HS's
[18:45] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I'm thinking that the only feasible way to do this...
[18:45] Corinne Fleury: perplexity, security in what way? opening the ports? or how patrons will use it?
[18:45] mOOn Jaecies: i have to admit, I was much more gung-ho a couple of days ago when...
[18:45] WhiteBoard (s): Now showing Image 12/12 - 12 ccsl_join
[18:45] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: is to bring along HS's that are already involved with the CC's in the program
[18:45] Perplexity Peccable: Opening the ports
[18:45] mOOn Jaecies: i was showing off some building to another educator in campus sandbox...
[18:45] Perplexity Peccable: also the usual - porn in the library argument
[18:45] Corinne Fleury: right. we have that concern too.
[18:45] Corinne Fleury: right and you cannot filter sl
[18:45] mOOn Jaecies: when i suddenly was ambushed with guns and blown up
[18:45] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: what happened Moon
[18:45] Corinne Fleury: TEY!
[18:45] Corinne Fleury: YET!
[18:45] Corinne Fleury: I meant
[18:45] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: well, you know...that happens
[18:45] Perplexity Peccable: :)
[18:46] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: oh, and porn happens
[18:46] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I give this argument and it works a treat
[18:46] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Some of you may recall
[18:46] shamblesguru Voom: sounds like the real world
[18:46] mOOn Jaecies: now i'm wondering, what happens when i'm trying to convince my college and colleagues and this happens, worse yet, when i've asked students to come into SL?
[18:46] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: when we first started to think about online courses
[18:46] Ariadne Yiyuan: How do you propose to handle HS students who are 18 and get kicked off the teen grid or younger CC students who are not old enough to be on the mature grid?
[18:46] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and everyone was panicked about the sex and gambling
[18:46] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: we did just fine
[18:47] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and most of our colleges would collapse without the online course
[18:47] Gus Plisskin: Corinne: We've been working with client mods that may allow filtering of "bad words"
[18:47] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: With the high schoolers, Ariadne...
[18:47] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I'm thinking of developing content on the MG
[18:47] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: and having the instructors take it to the TG
[18:47] Ophelia Lockjaw: what's the MG
[18:48] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Main Grid
[18:48] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: where we are
[18:48] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: see, the TG is an issue!
[18:48] Corinne Fleury: really GUs? I now the -12 admins who have to be CIPA compliant will thank you for that one
[18:48] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: you can't take anything over there from the MG
[18:48] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: without completely dismantling
[18:48] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: scripts and all
[18:48] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I am hoping they solve that before we go online with this
[18:49] shamblesguru Voom: Sorry ... I crashed .... hope this is not a repeat question .... if this info/experience/celebration on a web page?
[18:49] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: Someone had a comment about librarians
[18:49] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: its ok shambles
[18:49] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: ask away
[18:49] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: oh you did
[18:49] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I'm not sure
[18:49] shamblesguru Voom: ;-)
[18:49] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: KJ?
[18:50] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: will you have the chat log someplace?
[18:50] KJ Hax: sorry 1 sec

[18:50] Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks: I can put it on my blog
