ISTE Events in Second LifeISTE typically hosts in world events twice weekly: every Thursday at 6 PM SLT (that's US pacific time), we host a social event for educators to meet and network. We also host a weekly speaker series, and additional chats and discussions, on Tuesday evenings at 5 PM SLT. ISTE is pleased to introduce the ISTE Eduverse Talks series, a Second Life talk show highlighting the work of innovative K-20 educators and thought leaders worldwide. Presented with the generous support of Hewlett-Packard, this twice-monthly show is filmed and broadcast by the Second Life Community Network Television Station (SLCN.tv) and will feature innovations in educational technology, in both real life and Second Life. Episodes will be taped before a live studio audience, will be broadcast live via the web and SLCN.tv in world viewers, and will be archived online. This year ISTE Island is solicting proposals from educators in Second Life who would like to create a learning environment or simulation related to the ISTE 2010 conference in Denver, CO. The theme of this year's conference is "Exploring Excellence" and the winning project themes will include a focus on the region (Denver, the Rockies, the Four Corners, etc.), the cultures of the region, or simply the conference theme. Arrive early to ensure your spot! Effective preparation is the most important and often the most overlooked part of the Negotiation process. It is the only aspect of a negotiation over which you have complete control. This program will demonstrate how well-prepared negotiators are able to control the process rather than have the process control them. By thinking through the entire negotiation before it begins and by gathering as much information as possible, participants will be able to anticipate potential pitfalls and maintain their focus throughout the entire negotiation. Guest Christopher Shamburg (SL: Webster Mumblewood) will share audio clips and lessons from his ISTE Book, Student Powered Podcasting to show you just how easy it is to bring media into the classroom to engage students. Shamburg will also be sharing his experience with copyright law and how he integrates this into his lessons with students. Host Peggy Sheehy (SL: Maggie Marat) will also be raffling off copies of Chris’ book to the live studio audience so this is an episode you won’t want to miss! Christopher Shamburg is an Associate Professor in the Graduate Program in Educational Technology at New Jersey City University. He is the author of two ISTE books including NETS for Students: Units in the English Language Arts and Student-Powered Podcasting: Teaching for 21st Century Literacy. He is a workshop developer for the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington DC and an online high school English teacher for NJeSchool, where he has developed courses in podcasting and fanfiction. He previously taught high school English for ten years at the Hudson County School of Technology where he won several awards for his teaching. His professional interests are in the educational applications of remix and DIY technologies, teacher education, and innovations in language arts and English education. November 2009Tuesday, November 3, 5 PM SLTThe Pathways in-world Learning Management System Please join us for the unveiling of an exciting new way to teach in Second Life. The Pathways in-world Learning Management System lets teachers set up vw quest style learning activities in Second Life without technical skills. Pathways is a set of reuseable 'lego' like components you use to make a learning 'path'. Students follow along the path, hearing and seeing information or answering questions at each point. You can make the path branch and join. Student evaluations are emailed to you. There is no web site to figure out. Annie Obscure (Anne Ogborn in that other life) is the head of a cooperative that has created this new system. She is a software engineer who specializes in education and serious games. She has been the computer director of Ananya Shikshak Kendre, worked for Electronic Arts' Media Division, Apple Computer, Pogo.com, the Tech Museum of Innovation, was animation architect for GeoSpot, Inc., and is currently an instructional designer for the University of Houston , where she creates learning experiences in Second Life. The federal government of the United States of America has assembled an 18 person team to update and revise the National Education Technology Plan. Their report deadline is November 11, 2009. There will be a community meeting in Second Life for educational technology stakeholders to provide input into the planning process. Patio Plasma and Paul Doherty Senior Scientist at the Exploratorium. On April 1. 2006 two renegade staff members from the Exploratorium opened the first interactive science museum in Second Life named the Splo. The Splo is a museum of science, art, perception and humor. We now have two full sims, Sploland and Exploratorium, with over 100 interactive science exhibits. For example you can ride a molecule in Brownian motion, ride a cannon ball around the earth as suggested by Isaac Newton in the Principia, and also ride a galaxy cluster away from the big bang. Tuesday, October 6, 5 PM SLT ISTE Speaker Series Event: K-12 in SL Now and in the Future- Kids, Kastles, and Kites in SL Please join us in a panelist led open forum to discuss the exciting possibilities that Second Life holds for our students. The panel of educators come from various aspects of education - an elementary librarian (Doran Horngold), elementary technology specialist (Haley Swansong), middle school language arts teacher (Rebecca Zebendein), a high school math teacher (Trig Inkpen) and (Bisto Bock) elementary teacher - and will offer their ideas about: 1) where we are in SL right now with use by kids and problems intrinsic with that, 2) where we want to be and suggestions on how to get there, 3) ideas about how to create a "one stop shop" for educators - a place where educators can go to find educational websites, speakers for classes, and field trip possibilities. We have created a model of the human testis that students can fly through and interact with, in order to understand how the anatomy and physiology of the testis work together to regulate sperm production. Tuesday, September 8th, 5 PM SLT ISTE Speaker Series Event: Data Visualization - using virtual (and real) weather data to promote understanding & conservation Windy Schor (RL: Shawn Reeves) has created a suite of scripted objects that communicate statistics about the wind blowing through SL. These data visualization tools also extend to a database that schools can use to study FL winds from NOAA stations at nearby airports and even their own sites' data. At this presentation, participants will discuss the pedagogical value of the tools and how they might be used in different situations. Surving the first 6 months of 3d teaching Real life was simple enough. Fly around the globe delivering adult education. Tiring, yes. Expensive?, sure. But then one day a hiccup in the economy took the airplanes away. Shifting into 3d environments seemed better than talking into a quiet phone while looking at my own slides. And 3d is no mere replacement for proximity. The power of immersion can spark understanding and promote retention. But how can I teach students when I don't know how to turn my camera to see my slides, or how to make my hair behave. They ended up with an entire island! On the island, VSTE has created a virtual simulation of the Jamestown Settlement and Powhatan Village of 1607 for educators to use as a resource in preparing rich and engaging lessons for their students.
